
The University of Greenwich (UoG) in the Great Britain was established in 1890, with a history spanning over 133 years. It was formerly known as Woolwich Polytechnic College and was elevated to a comprehensive public University in 1992. In 1996, the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute and the Maritime Institute were incorporated into the university , further integrating with its related disciplines and enhancing UoG's overall research capabilities.
Prominent Chinese students in the first wave of studying in the UK, such as Yan Fu and Lin Yongsheng, studied shipbuilding and navigation here. Nobel Prize in Physics laureate, the "Father of Fiber Optics," Charles, Kun Gao, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the current President of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, also studied at UoG . The University of Greenwich is also one of the ten largest universities in the UK, known as the "Versailles of the UK," and is one of the universities recommended by China's Ministry of Education for studying abroad.
The University of Greenwich has awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize five times, in recognition of its contributions to the development of higher education and its significant achievements in promoting business, economy, and industry. It has also won the Times Higher Education Award nine times, which honors institutions or individuals for outstanding contributions to higher education in the UK. Additionally, in 2023, UoG was awarded the Gold Award for Teaching Excellence (TEF) by the Times Higher Education.
UoG enjoys a prime location in central London, situated at the foot of the world-famous heritage site, the Greenwich Observatory. The Prime Meridian runs through the campus, and it is adjacent to the River Thames, with a view of Canary Wharf, the renowned financial district of the UK, across the river.
UoG offers a multi-level talent cultivation system, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, and joined the "UK University Alliance" in March 2013. Currently, UoG has three campuses, two world-class research institutes, and four schools: the Business School, the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Science, and the Faculty of Education and Health, comprising a total of 11 departments. UoG offers over 400 programs, most of which are accredited by relevant associations or institutions, and maintains strong partnerships with Fortune 500 companies. Majority of undergraduate courses provide internship opportunities.
